هنگامی که آوازه اش در بغداد پیچید،، از سوی متوکل برای تعلیم دو فرزندش معتزّ و مویّد دعوت به عمل آمد.
او که قدرت امتناع نداشت، به تدریس، تربیت و تعلیم فرزندان متوکل مشغول شد و شدیداً تقیّه را رعایت می کرد تا روزی که متوکل با کمال گستاخی به او گفت: آیا این دو فرزند من پیش تو عزیزتر هستند یا حسن و حسین؟!
ابن سکیت دیگر سکوت را جایز ندید، با کمال شجاعت گفت:
قنبر غلام امیر مومنان نزد من از تو و فرزندانت عزیزتر هست.

سوم رجب 254 روز شهادت دهمین امام نور حضرت امام هادی می باشد. امام هادی از سال 233 به اقامت اجباری در سامرا ناگزیر شد.
12 سال از دوران امامت امام هادی در عهد متوکل عباسی بود.
متوکل امام هادی را به سامرا جلب کرد و در منطقه ی نظامی مشهور به «عسکر» اسکان داد.
هدف از این کار جلوگیری از تولد امام زمان بود که سرانجام اراده ی الهی تحقق یافت و حضرت مهدی در میان تدبیرهای بسیار سخت خلفای عباسی دیده به جهان گشود.
متوکل ناصبی بود، 17 بار حرم مطهر امام حسین را با خاک یکسان کرد، بخشنامه صادر کرد که هرکس در حائر دیده شود زندانی گردد و هر کس به زبارت امام حسین برود دستش قطع شود.
امام هادی در چنین شرایطی شیعیان را به زیارت امام حسین تشویق می کرد، متوکل ها رفتند و نامی از آن ها جز برای لعن و نفرین برده نمی شود و همه ساله بیش از بیست میلیون نفر به زیارت اربعین مشرف می شوند.
امام هادی برای هر منطقه ای وکیل تعیین کرد و سازمان وکالت را سازماندهی کرد.
هرکدام از آن ها شناخته می شدند و شخص دیگری را به جای او تعیین می نمود.
اسامی 346 نفر از وکلای آن حضرت را مرحوم آیة الله قزوینی در کتاب «الامام الهادی» ص 142 - 467 معرفی کرده است.

این کنیزان افراد بسیار فرهیخته ای بودند و در سرزمین حجاز هماوردی نداشتند.
امام هادی در مورد مادرش «سمانه» می فرماید:
مادرم به حق من عارف بود، اهل بهشت بود، شیطان به او راه نداشت و محفوظ به حفظ الهی بود.
امام هادی در عصر مامون متولد شد و در دوران امامتش با شش خلیفه معاصر بود: معتصم، واثق، متوکل، منتصر، مستعین و معتز.
در علم خداوند مقدر بود که امام زمان در سنین کودکی به امامت برسد، خداوند منان برای این کار اولا دو تن از پیامبران (حضرت عیسی و حضرت یحیی) را در سنین کودکی به نبوت مبعوث نمود، چنانچه در قرآن به آن تصریح شده است.(1)
ثانیا امام جواد را در هفت سالگی و امام هادی را در هشت سالگی به امامت منصوب نمود.
پیامبران و امامان علمشان «لدنّی» است، نیازی به نحصیل ندارند و لذا امامان (با اخلاف سن موجود) از لحاظ علمی یکسان می باشند.
